Joe T. I just put out the info in hopes of finding out more info based on scanner info as they were heading in that direction. I tried to post a correction but it didnt post. The situation was troubling but I don't think putting out inaccurate death counts or unconfirmed details many hours after is quite the same. That said, Don't get your panties in a wad you jerk. This thread has served has outlived it's usefulness at this point. My concern was for the victims. Get a life.

9 p.m.: The Watauga County Sheriff's Office confirmed the names of the two officers who received gunshot wounds at the beginning of the situation. Sergeant Chris Ward died after being flown to John City Medical Center, while K-9 Deputy Logan Fox remains on the scene. His condition is unknown at the time. The names and conditions of any civilians are also unknown at this time, according to law enforcement. "This is an incredibly tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved as well as their families and our community," said Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman. "I greatly appreciate the tremendous support we are receiving from law enforcement agencies across the region and the state."

A well being check turns into a nightmare, yet some people want to send social workers out on these calls instead of LEOs. Wonder how social workers feel about the issue?

A friend of the family talked to a journalist. They removed four bodies from the house (the parents, and two officers) and the son is now in custody.

Update : three officers shot, one dead, one hanging on by a thread. Sounds like the police went to do a welfare check on an elderly couple who weren't answering the phone or going to work, and when they got there, the shooter ambushed them. The son is an older gentleman, not a teenager.
This is all so awful :( A similar incident happened in 2019 on Orchard Rd in Deep Gap, but that person was 16 when he shot his parents. Terribly terribly sad.
I think the reason the schools were on lockdown probably has to do with the shooter and maybe their kids were at those schools.

If the shooter isn't in custody and by all available information the shooter isn't, if they didn't recommend these actions and the shooter was able to get to the school and harm kids...well then. Exactly how much law enforcement training do you have?

According to this they know where the shooter is and have since this started. So I ask again what is the reason for a lock down on a school that is miles and miles away from where this is happening? 4 p.m.: The Watauga County Sheriff's Office gave the following statement: On April 28 at 9:44 a.m., the Watauga County Sheriff's Office responded to a call for a welfare check at 553 Hardaman Circle in Boone because the homeowner and his family did not attend work or respond to telephone calls. Deputies entered the residence after discovering all vehicles belonging to the residents were on the property. Upon entering the home, deputies received gunfire from an unknown individual within the residence. Two deputies received gunshot wounds. One deputy was extracted from the location and has been flown to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment. The other deputy remains on the scene. The condition of the deputy on scene remains unknown at this time. The shooter remains active on scene, barricaded in a section of the home. The shooter periodically fires the weapon in the direction of officers. Law enforcement currently has the home surrounded and has evacuated nearby residents.
