Sorry, IVC orders automatically expire after 24 hours if not served.

Joseph,
If what I heard is true someone tried to get him help and the cops dropped the ball. If there really was a commitment order that was supposed to be served and wasn't this whole thing falls back on the cops and someone should lose their job and be prosecuted for murder.

I think you're a little quick there, the fact that there MAY have been an unserved involuntary commitment order for the shooter doesn't mean anyone failed to do their jobs, an adult that has access to a motor vehicle can disappear in minutes, if the person can't be found the IVC order can't be served. Under NC law LEO's can't force entry into a private residence without probable cause (or exigent circumstances) to serve an IVC order. A NC issued IVC order doesn't travel across state lines, given Watauga's proximity to TN and VA a person needing to be picked could just hide across the line until the order expires. Speaking of expiring a NC IVC order automatically expires after 24 if unserved and a new IVC order must be obtained.
So before you start blaming LEO's the fact that an IVC order that may have been issued and had not been served doesn't mean it's law enforcement fault. Why don't put the blame for this incident where it ultimately belongs, on the person who decided to shoot and kill other people.

I have never agreed with the stopping of helping the mental ill or of the closing of state mental hospitals.

So Joe agrees with me on something.

We, as a society, stopped helping/providing mental help and the amount of homelessness and shootings have skyrocketed.

Now when is it, do we want to control guns or help the mentally ill?

Your required by law to have trigger locks on your guns, if you have kids. 1 trigger lock would have saved all these lives.

No you are not you are only required to have safe storage. And since no kids where involved nothing is required.

 14-315.1. Storage of firearms to protect minors.

(a) Any person who resides in the same premises as a minor, owns or possesses a firearm, and stores or leaves the firearm (i) in a condition that the firearm can be discharged and (ii) in a manner that the person knew or should have known that an unsupervised minor would be able to gain access to the firearm, is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor if a minor gains access to the firearm without the lawful permission of the minor's parents or a person having charge of the minor and the minor:

(1) Possesses it in violation of G.S. 14-269.2(b);

(2) Exhibits it in a public place in a careless, angry, or threatening manner;

(3) Causes personal injury or death with it not in self defense; or

(4) Uses it in the commission of a crime.

(b) Nothing in this section shall prohibit a person from carrying a firearm on his or her body, or placed in such close proximity that it can be used as easily and quickly as if carried on the body.

(c) This section shall not apply if the minor obtained the firearm as a result of an unlawful entry by any person.

(d) "Minor" as used in this section means a person under 18 years of age who is not emancipated. (1993, c. 558, s. 2; 1994, Ex. Sess., c. 14, s. 11.)

Mental health issues and guns.

You don't want to control guns, then get people mental help.

Remember the school shooting in Fl where the cops and the FBI were notified about the kid and no one did anything and look what happen.

One deputy was killed and another injured while performing a welfare check at a North Carolina home Wednesday, authorities said.

The suspected shooter was still barricaded in the home, the Watauga County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday night.

Deputies responded to the home in Boone at around 9:44 a.m. after the homeowner's employer reported that the person had not reported to work or responded to phone calls, authorities said.

The two deputies were shot by an "unknown individual" upon entering the home, the sheriff's office said.

One of the officers, identified by authorities as Sgt. Chris Ward, died after being flown to Johnson City Medical Center. The second, identified as K-9 Deputy Logan Fox, was still on the scene. His condition was unknown, authorities said.

The suspected shooter has barricaded themself in a section of the home and periodically fires toward officers, authorities said. Law enforcement has surrounded the home and evacuated nearby residents.

A neighbor reported hearing several shots nearby Wednesday morning.

"I had just walked out in the yard and heard 'Bang, bang, bang, bang,'" Wiley Brown told ABC Charlotte affiliate WSOC. "I really didn't know what it was."

WSOC captured at least three ambulances responding to the scene, as well as a medical helicopter.

I have read on another site that its is over a the two cops died along with the two parents and that their adult son killed himself.

I also just heard that there was an involuntary commitment order for the shooter that was supposed to be served the night before but wasn't . It is important to note that I can't confirm this.
